Why are the lakes so blue?
In Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and other area lakes are world renowned for their distinctive turquoise hue. The impressive colour comes from silt-like rock flour continually being carried into the lake by melt-water from the surrounding glaciers. The tiny and uniform particles become suspended in the water, refracting blue and green wavelengths of light.
The phenomenon, an exceptional example of glacial geological erosion and deposition, helped earn Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks a spot on the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. At these Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks you’ll find some of the world’s most spectacular mountains, glaciers and waterfalls. Here the Burgess Shale fossil site, with its exquisitely preserved remains, is one of the most significant fossil sites on earth.
Both amateur and professional photographers around the world flock here to capture the stunning displays. In this scenic splendor, outdoor adventures are limitless and are easily accessible as day trips from our convenient location. Ask Lake Louise Inn staff for suggestions, favourite spots and insider tips on exploring the area, or relax here and enjoy our four-season resort amenities.
